Solana Meme Coin Trading: Bonk Treasury Loses $20 Million in Attack

A governance proposal drained roughly 20 million dollars from BonkDAO's treasury, rattling Solana's meme coin trading scene…

Solana meme coin trading is back in the spotlight after BonkDAO, the governance body behind the Bonk token, disclosed a governance attack that drained roughly 20 million dollars from its treasury.

The theft happened around 4:00 a.m. ET on a Monday, when more than 4.4 trillion BONK tokens, worth about 19.3 million dollars at the time, moved out of the treasury wallet to an address ending in JHvQ. BonkDAO called it a drain rather than a hack, since the funds moved through a governance proposal that had actually passed a vote.

How a Governance Vote Became a Heist

The proposal responsible, Bonk Improvement Proposal 76, carried the title Sowellian BonkDAO. On paper it promised to install new council members, rebuild the DAO's structure, and monetize its holdings. Buried inside was a second instruction that authorized the treasury transfer. The proposal also dangled BONK rewards for anyone who voted yes, which likely encouraged quick support without much scrutiny.

Solscan, the Solana blockchain explorer, traced the receiving wallet back to funding from a Bybit account. Later that same day, around 3:30 p.m. ET, the tokens moved again, this time to a separate address ending in eh42. None of the funds have been distributed to voters or returned to the treasury.

Exchanges Freeze BONK Activity

South Korean exchange Upbit and U.S. based Kraken both paused deposits and withdrawals of BONK following the incident. Upbit pointed to user protection measures tied to what it called a security incident. BonkDAO says it is coordinating with centralized exchanges, network bridges, and the Solana Foundation to trace the funds and has notified law enforcement.

What This Means for Solana's Meme Coin Scene

BONK has fallen about 7% over the past day, trading near 0.0000043 dollars. That is roughly 93% below its all time high of 0.000058 dollars, a reminder of how far the token has drifted since its peak popularity, when it briefly ranked among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market value.

Solana itself, the blockchain that hosts BONK and much of the meme coin trading activity in this corner of crypto, is holding relatively steady. SOL/USD trades at 81.89 dollars, up 0.36% on the day, a modest move that stands in contrast to the chaos unfolding around one of its most recognizable community tokens.

Governance Risk Now Front and Center

The episode raises uncomfortable questions about how decentralized these organizations really are when a single proposal, dressed up with promises of rebuilding and rewards, can move tens of millions of dollars with apparent ease. Crypto remains a volatile market broadly, and meme coins carry outsized risk even by that standard. BonkDAO says its investigation continues, and it has not said whether any of the stolen tokens have been recovered.
